This Award-Winning Dining Room Is Proof That Family-Friendly Can Still Be Fabulous

This isn’t your typical dining room—it’s where bold style meets everyday family life, proving that high style and family-friendly comfort can coexist beautifully.

This Mequon dining room just took home an ASID Wisconsin award, and honestly, we can’t stop admiring the transformation. Part of a full-home refresh for a young family relocating closer to grandparents, they wanted a space that truly felt like theirs—stylish, cozy, and built for real life. The house itself was a grand executive estate—solidly built but missing that warm, lived-in vibe. Our mission? To bring warmth and meaning back to every room. And this dining room? It quickly became the heart and soul of the entire home.

Where It All Started

When our clients first walked us through the space, they shared two clear goals:

  • Make it feel cozier—even with the grand scale.
  • Make it work for real life with two young kids.

The dining room sat front and center between the entry and kitchen, which meant it had to pull double duty: one part elevated style statement, one part everyday function.

But it came with a challenge: the long, narrow footprint. One centrally placed table would have made the room feel off-balance and underused. So instead, we split it in half—with intention.

A Tale of Two Zones (That Flow Like One)

We divided the room into two cohesive zones:

  • A formal dining area with custom-upholstered curved chairs and a shimmering chandelier.
  • A fireside retreat with a plush, leather ottoman perfect for lounging, sipping, and supervising little ones.

Together, they create a seamless, inviting space that feels both grand and grounded.

Texture, Tone, and That Moody Blue

We leaned all the way in on deep, layered hues—drawing from the family’s travels to Portugal and the soulful tones they loved.

  • The inky blue wallpaper has a hand-rubbed look and subtle shimmer that feels rich without overwhelming.
  • The high-gloss blue trim and millwork adds depth and creates that cocoon-like warmth we’re always after in dining rooms.
  • Original architectural details like the buffet and fireplace mantel were preserved to ground the room in authenticity and age.

Designed for Real Life (And Real Style)

This family wanted a space they wouldn’t be afraid to live in. That meant easy-to-clean upholstery, durable materials, and a room that felt just as comfortable for a weeknight meal as it does for a holiday gathering.

A few highlights:

  • The leather ottoman doubles as a soft play surface and a chic place to set your wine glass.
  • Mixed-material dining chairs offer wipeable durability with major design cred.
  • A hand-painted wedding portrait by a local artist brings it all back to what matters: the people who live here.

The End Result

This dining room is moody, meaningful, and made for memories. And now? It’s an ASID Wisconsin award-winner—which feels like the cherry on top of a space already full of heart.
